The Glow of Discovery – Unlocking Nature’s Living Light

The presence of the Latia neritoides—the world’s only bioluminescent freshwater limpet—is more than a biological anomaly; it is a glowing testament to the hidden complexities of New Zealand’s ancient ecosystems. At The Glow of Discovery, students don’t just observe the dark—they illuminate the unknown through rigorous field entomology and aquatic research.

E7 Flight School: Reconstructing the Definition of "Science"

The 12,000km non-stop migration of the Bar-tailed Godwit (E7) is not just a biological miracle; it is a challenge to our understanding of the natural world. At E7 Flight School, students don't just watch birds—they join a global investigation into the limits of biological endurance.

Intertidal Ecology

Students conduct a Marine Metre Squared survey in intertidal rock pools, using a 1m x 1m quadrate to analyse biodiversity, assess species resilience under environmental stress, and extract core ecological principles.

March 2024

Nature's First Principles: Intertidal Systems & Ecological Restoration

Students from Tongxing Academy (China & Singapore) embarked on an immersive 3-day YES Camp journey. Using New Zealand’s dynamic intertidal zones and ongoing ecological restoration sites as outdoor laboratories, we looked beyond conventional biological observation. Nature served as a tactical model for understanding boundary conditions, systemic resilience, and equilibrium under stress. Through hands-on intertidal species analysis and active ecosystem restoration, students learned to extract underlying logic—discovering how nature self-organises, adapts, and recovers, and translating these universal patterns into strategic thinking for their own learning, decision-making, and real-world challenges.

New Zealand Dotterel

The northern New Zealand dotterel is a shorebird which breeds exclusively on beaches in New Zealand's North Island.

Beijing Zhengze School

Beijing Zhengze is focusing on holistic, individual-centred development to cultivate well-rounded students with traditional Chinese heritage, a global perspective, and a future-ready mindset.

Beyond Ecology: Decoding Nature's Laws for Real-World Actions

In January 2025, students from Beijing Zhengze School joined us for a 4-day Wildlife Conservation Academy journey. Using New Zealand’s isolated ecosystem—from micro-habitats to Gondwana origins—as a physical laboratory, we looked far beyond traditional biology. Here, nature was not the destination, but a lens to uncover universal principles, structural systems, and fundamental logic. Guided by Anne Zhang, a Year 13 student from Saint Kentigern College, Chinese students explored how she leveraged predator monitoring technology to safeguard the endemic New Zealand Dotterel on her campus. Through this mentorship, students learned to trace underlying patterns across disciplines and translate ecological insights into actionable, real-world solutions back in their own schools and communities.

Thanks

Thank you for applying.

YES! Scholars reviews every application carefully.
If we feel there may be a good fit, we will invite you and your family for a conversation.

If not, you will still hear back from us — with respect.

Application Form

Applying does not mean committing.
It simply opens a conversation.

There are no “right” answers here. We’re simply trying to understand how you think.
Activites at YES! Scholars are not “tasks to complete.”
They are journeys that evolve over time.
It’s okay if your answers change. We’re interested in how you’re thinking now.
YES! Scholars is a guided process that unfolds over time.

Student Quiz

There is no “right” starting point.
What matters is whether you keep moving forward.
The most meaningful projects rarely begin with certainty.
YES! Scholars focuses on C —
because that’s what grades alone can’t show.
If you want support turning curiosity into real exploration, let’s keep going.

Parent Quiz

Most universities are really looking for C.
Projects are evidence of future potential — not trophies.
A student who can explain how they explored, adjusted, and reflected is often more compelling than one with polished but shallow results.
YES! Scholars chooses B —
slower, deeper, and far harder to fake.
If you are looking beyond activity lists, you may want to explore YES! Scholars.

What do universities really look for in “activities”?

1 minute. No right or wrong answers.
Just a different way of thinking.

This policy is reviewed annually or following any incident where substance use is suspected or confirmed.

Approved by Nigel Zhang, Chief Education Officer, on 1st July 2023.

Our Safety Philosophy

At Greenfield, we do not eliminate all risks, but we embrace the idea of “acceptable risk” as an essential ingredient in real learning. For example, allowing ākonga to plan their own hiking route fosters independence, while the presence of a trained leader/supervisor ensures safety in navigating uneven terrain.

We define “acceptable risk” as a managed risk where the benefits of learning and growth outweigh the potential harm, provided appropriate controls are in place. This principle is openly communicated with whānau (families) through our consent forms, meetings, and pre-trip information packs.

Our philosophy also incorporates the concept of kaitiakitanga, guardianship and care for our environment, acknowledging our responsibility to act respectfully on land with cultural significance, particularly in areas connected to local iwi.

We help people:

  • Take ownership of their learning and safety
  • Develop awareness of hazards and responses
  • Cultivate resilience through real challenges
  • Respect and care for the natural world and one another
